PORTRAITS OF THE-NON-EXISTENT-BIRD - DANIEL KNODERER.

Born in 1948 in Paris. A genial bookbinding artist, long marginalized by the professional world of art bookbinders and that of bibliophiles who love original bindings. Between 1990 and 1992, Claude Lemand offered to Daniel Knoderer the possibility to create 27 original bindings on books by different artists of his collection, including 7 copies of the book by Aveline-Zadkine, Portrait de l’Oiseau-Qui-N’Existe-Pas and Autres poèmes, Geneva, 1965. All of these bindings have been exhibited in 1993 at the Historical Library of the City of Paris, described and reproduced in the exhibition’s catalog: Knoderer, 150 bindings.

“ I bind only books that I have read, that I like, that interest me. It is when I understood the book and what it contained, text and illustration, that my work could begin. Often without any a priori and almost completely improvised, as for a modern piece of music. The technical and plastic choices - colors, materials – naturally imposed themselves on me, without the feeling that I am responsible of the choices. It’s always the book that inspires me to take this or that direction; without the book, I do nothing! ”
